i am going to build a pc pretty soon and i would like to know how much of a difference 2gb of ddr3 1600 ram will make against 3gb of ddr2 800 ram. im using the ddr2 ram and i often find myself only having around 7 or so mb of ram left while playing simple games and would li ke to know whether that will still happen with the 2gb of ddr3? it will have a 64 bit os and the ddr2 ram is running on a 32bit os.

If your builiding a new PC which will be windows 7 or 8 you pretty need to have at least 4GB of RAM. Though I would recommend 8 GB I would also make that your install the 64 bit version of the OS while this will use more idle memory it will allow use of over 4GB of memory and some new games will start requiring it.

Oh and just to answer your questions fully you want ddr3 if you building a new rig you would have to find an older MB to support ddr2 and if you building new you should go backward plus I would think ddr3 is cheap than Ddr2 since its main stream.

I guess i didn't word my question that well. what i want to know is the performance difference it will make im using 3gb of ddr2 800 ram in my old laptop and i want to know how much of a difference it would be when i build the computer. i know that ddr2 ram is old and i dont want it, i just want to know the performance difference.

DDR2 vs DDR3 is only a small part of the equation.
Motherboard, OS, laptop vs desktop...all that comes in to play. You can't quantify 2GB of DDR3 vs 3GB of DDR2 in completely different platforms.

And if you're building a new PC, 2GB is woefully inadequate.

I guess the question i asked was more complex then i thought. i already know that ddr3 is better, and i will be getting 8gbs. i already know its better but i really just wanted to know what people see different with better ram rather then what is better to have as i already know that.
