Can anyone recommend a good 550W 80 plus Gold rated power supply that will fit this system? Had my eye on the Corsair RM550.

Getting some random shutdowns with an error of device failure since adding a XFX Raedon HD 6670 graphics card and replacing both hard drives with and just want to rule out psu being the problem by proactively upgrading it plus it's probably a good thing to do anyway. Still have the stock 360W piece of crap. Not a gamer and won't be adding any additional components to this system so wanted to stick to 550W.

Thanks.

Hi seimsg02,
I own a Dell Studio XPS 435mt which I use daily. I bought a large, XFX 750w PSU. It fit but I had to remove the DVD/Rom and all my ram. This was a tight ugly push past the heatsink/fan but I shoved this non-recommended idea in. The next time, I got a little smarter and removed the heatsink/fan. I installed a Seasonic G-series 650w PSU into the 435mt. If you're using a video card bigger than the stock Radeon HD4850, you're doing the right thing upgrading your PSU. Here lies the problem. Heat. There are no bios updates for the Dell Studio XPS 435mt so you're really limited on how much you can upgrade. I shoved a Radeon HD7850 PCIe3 2gb video card into it and was a happy camper till I read my temperatures. The northbridge...

Turns out RM550 is longer than a standard run-of-the-mill ATX psu so I went with the Corsair CX600M which has the same dimensions as the stock 360W psu in the Dell XPS Studio 435mt so I know it will fit it's case properly without having to modify the case. It also has the needed 8-pin EPS 12V connector for it's motherboard.

I shoved a Radeon HD7850 PCIe3 2gb video card into it and was a happy camper till I read my temperatures. The northbridge chipset which handles the video coming from the cpu shot up to 85c on it's way to 90c. I ended up buying a heatsink fan combination for my northbridge. People will say, "Oh. yeah. a PCIe3 video card is compatable with a PCIe2 motherboard" but I think it stresses the design a bit. True, it works. It just gets hot because it has to work harder with the dated '09 volt control settings Also, add a few more fans helps.
Now my little secret. The manufacturer that makes SeaSonic, makes XFX and the Corsair brands PSU. I'm sure they make PSUs for a few more companies but these I know. They are great PSUs. I'm sure Rosewill and Thermaltake are contracted by other companies to build power supply units. All of which are good.
I like the Dell Studio XPS 435mt. I think for purposes outside gaming, it's got a few more productive years. Every once in a while I'll game on the internet and still get good fps.

I have the same Dell system and I've also swapped out a graphics card. Also not a gamer. I run Adobe software on a daily basis, and give it a workout. Did the Corsair CX600M work for this system? My current factory Power Supply has failed and will not power on. Needing to fix this fast. Thanks in advance.

Did you have to remove or modify anything to install a Seasonic G 650W in the Dell xps 435mt? I was going to go with the Corsair mentioned above but it is out of stock on Amazon. Do you have any idea if this would work? SeaSonic G Series 550-Watt ATX12V/EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply SSR-550RM (I think it's the same as yours but with less watts?) Thanks!!

Did the CX600M install without any modification of the plugs, etc? I have a 435MT Dell that the PSU is dying....

My stock PSU just died and I replaced with a Thermaltake Smart Series 650W, about $70. It fit perfectly. There are a lot of extra connectors, but they all stuff down between the PSU and the drives. Now with all this extra power I'm thinking about upgrading the video.

Hi. I went with the Corsair CX600M and I got it today. Very happy with the results. It's too bad Dell doesn't put better power supplies into their units. It's nice to have one that can handle more wattage if I need it to.
