I suggest you do. Next time, apply as much as a grain of rice. Press down the cooler and it will spread naturally. The less paste/grease the faster heat transfers.

Just power down and wipe it off with some pure rubbing alcohol. You could take off the heat sink and re-apply the compound but I would just wipe of the excess and monitor my temperatures. As long as you don't get that stuff in your cpu socket you might be alright. Next time only use a small amount about the size of a pea in the center.

^Great pic. You seriously don't need much at all. What they give you in the tube could last many builds (so long as the paste does not expire).

It is recommended you use pure alcohol, but I did not. It isn't totally neccesary, but it means a lot less work to make sure the surface is totally clean. Tissues and fibrous things leave tiny fibres which can lessen the effectiveness of your cooler and paste, but unless you are doing some extreme OCing, I wouldn't worry about any you can't see.

So some paper towel should be fine?

Do you not have any micro fiber towels? Like what you clean your glasses with, or a car shammy that's clean. A paper towel leaves a lot of residue. A Q tip will also work well without leaving particles.
