I'm looking to buy the MSI Z87-GD65 and a MSI card. More than likely the new R9-280X. But lets say that card goes south due to performance or price. If that so happens, I want to get the MSI 7970 3gb OC BE. My question is if I get the older card will the board be able to give it the power boost it gives their "gaming" cards. If not looks like I will be getting the new card.

More about : msi cards msi boards

To be honest sounds like more of MSIs 'hype' advertising, just like the GD65 and 45 are 'gaming' mobos, these lines have been around back to the Z68 and P67, just a regular part of their mobo lineup, then with the Z77 all of a sudden Black and Red (sound strangely like the Asus ROG mobos, and conviently priced under the ROG mobos) if building a Z87 I'd look to the Big 3 for a mobo, Asus, the Rock or GB, I and most of the builders I know won't touch MSI due to their poor QC

I didnt even know they were considered to be gaming motherboards. I have a Z68MA-G45, is that actually what the G stands for? Thats a little lame. I generally dont like the quality of MSI either, but I chose this board because it was exactly what I was looking for in a motherboard and fit the financial bill. I've overclocked the 2500K I have up past 4.4GHz stable and it was great, but I didnt leave it there for long because of cooling issues.

Though, the black and red motherboard looks really cool, my friend got one, and it comes with an onboard SoundBlaster.

I'd be second in recommending ASUS, ASRock, or Gigabyte. Literally every other motherboard I own is an ASUS, and they are stupid reliable. My Gigabyte AM2+ was a fantastically stable overclocker. And...I've never owned an ASRock...so I cant speak on their behalf.

EDIT: Ones I definitely wont touch are ECS and Biostar.

No, was saying the GD mobos have been a round a long time, used to be Blue, they also have the GD80 and another 1 or 2 - they just changed the 45 and 65 with the Z77 to make it look like a ROG mobo

Ditto on the BioStar and ECS, I get more than a few that come wanting MSI and other oddballs in their builds (EVGA, ECS, Bio, occasionally Foxconn) but if they won't change the mobo, I'll send them elsewhere, it's $100 out the window, but if anything goes wrong it ends up costing me alot more than that just in my time...So I just say No

which mobo do you recommend that is under $200 is for gaming and some overclocking. This is my first build and i have never overclocked, wanna try something new. Do you feel the same for MSI cards?

Not being a S*A*, but at a penny under is the Asus Maximus VI Hero, that's what I decided on, and can't be happier, not only is it my primary workstation, but I use it to test components for new build, upgrades, repairs etc, has run old GPUs up through 780's in SLI and 7970's in Xfire, in DRAM have run up to 16GB of 2800 (highest I've played with) and I run 32GB of 2666....Predicted a couple months ago it would be the big Z87 mobo and it's looking like it might be true, even at a $200 price tag

how many 4pin connectors does it have and how is the audio? I would like to have 4 or 5 4pin fan connectors, two for cpu and three for my case.

5 I'm positive about, and the Audio is the ROG Supreme FX, I'm no audiophile, but much, much better than the common Realtek type audio, had thought about getting a Xonar sound card, but no need
