Right now I'm using a laptop for all of my computing purposes, and no matter how I try to station myself / my laptop, using the thing gives me a terrible sore neck. Probably from unconsciously hunching over the small 15" screen. I never had this problem using a desktop.

So I'm upgrading to a desktop (iMac), and I have a choice between a 21.5" monitor and a 27". My question is, will the 27" help me out? I don't really care about screen real estate; I just want this damned sore neck to stop bothering me. >:[ However, I don't want to spend unnecessary money.

27" is a nice size. Keep in mind with the iMac purchase, that you are spending money on mobile parts. It will not be as fast as going with a MacPro or PC desktop.

I quite like larger sceens as well, it doesn't strain the eye as much. I have 23" and 24" screens and I see a difference between even these. But, I surprised you're not considering just getting a screen, keyboard and mouse (if you don't already have those) and power it with the laptop.

Yeah, most laptops either have a vga, HDMI port or both.
