Hi guys. Ive been struggling the past two days with this and I cant seem to get it working :/

I built my computer myself installed Windows 7 and the system has:

MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming
Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell 3.4GHz
MSI Gaming N760 TF 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 760
CORSAIR CX Series CX750 750W
SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Thermaltake Chaser Series Chaser MK-1

The problem is I know my mobo's onboard audio supports 5.1 but I dont think the Realtek audio drivers are working correctly because im not getting surround at all just 2 channels from my front and right speaker. My audio receiver is a STR K7000 and im hooked up to my Toshiba TV via HDMI and the PC is connected to the receiver via fiber optic. Ive tried playing movies that have 6 channels audio but I can only get these two to play. If I let the sound carrry over hdmi and then hook the optic cable from the tv to the receiver the speakers play but its not 5.1 my recievers blue light that shows its encoding the channels doesnt light up. My receiver works fine with my xbox and ps3 via optic cable and was wanting some help as I basically wasted my day on this problem. Thanks in advance sorry for grammar.

UPDATE: After restoring my receiver to factory settings I no longer get sound from all my speakers using the PC > HDMI to Tv > Optic to receiver

Well the optical out is only 2 channel except for DD and DTS SPDIF out. To do 5.1 you would need to connect the HDMI out from your GPU to the HDMI in on the STR K7000 and then from the STR K7000 HDMI out to the TV.

Optical out does not have the bandwidth to handle 5.1 uncompressed PCM audio so it is limited to 2 channel and compressed DD and DTS out.

Try if optic cable works with pc too.
STR 700 you can make choice what sound you use? Is this right?
HDMI can work with auto but sometimes it do not.
Selection can be like Optic, coaxial, and so on..
Try other hdmi cable too.
Other thing is tv sound working trough optic cable?
Thing can be with selection what sound you use with STR 700
Try different sound modes.
Then pc needs to work properly for STR 700 so try direct hdmi cable to tv and find out if that works.

Then look pc drivers to find out if drivers are enabled to use nvidia audio drivers. You have latest drivers?
The speaker icon on your desktop will allow you to choose which one you prefer for each device.

Well bryonhowley did figure this out :) I was thinking same thing that all parts are not in same "mode"
that was simple solution:) hope it works:)

Thank you all for the replys, but the STR K7000 is actually weird in the sense that it does not output hdmi audio to the speakers and instead passthrus to the TV. The hdmi to Tv works fine. The windows 7 installation I have now is a disc from my brother. I previously had windows 8 and I was able to get 5.1 audio over optical using the netflix app but not the netflix website or anywhere on the desktop so i thought it was a win 8 bug and went to 7 instead. I dont mind if its compressed 5.1 I just want my surround sound to play on this comp. I know it transmits the signal I want over optical because ive seen it happen through netflix app.

Im back on Win 8 using optical from mobo to receiver. When I tried HDMI sound to the TV, then optical from the TV to the receiver, my sub woofer will play in normal stereo but I wont get 5.1 from the netflix app when I use it. I do get the 5.1 encoding blue led on my receiver when I use the optical straight from the mobo to the receiver. A coworker said I needed dolby digital live but when I use that it says it cant detect a supported device. Im so stuck and it hurts :( I can get the 5.1 signal from apps but not on my desktop? I dont understand.
