Are the two PCIe3 lanes far enough apart to crossfire two ASUS Matrix Platinums 7970 GHz Edition? Eyeing it, it looks doable but does anyone know for sure?

The short answer is yes. But due to the fact that Matrix 7970 cards take up three slots and that motherboards just have three slots of space between the two PCIe slots. your top card's intake fans essentially will be blocked by the card installed below,so the card will overheat due to lack of cool air. I think the overheating would get worse, once you decide to overclock your gpus. the setup will work, but should not be considered as an optimal setup thermally speaking. I used to own asus directcu ii 7970, which is very similar to the matrix edition in term of design and implementation. so you can trust me, when i tell you that it does run hot.

If done, it's essential to have a case which has a side inlet fan to blow cool air towards the GPUs.
