i used NTFS. I don't know what on earth GT is. how do you format using GPT? essentially, ive got a 3 TB HDD and want to split it up into 2TB and 1TB. im using windows 7 and the HDD does not pick up when I try to use a boot disk.

NTFS is the file system (format). GPT is the partition type. Volumes over 2.2TB need to use GPT. I beleive only windows 7 x64 and higher can boot off a GPT partition and that requires a UEFI motherboard.

Q. Can Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?

A. Yes, all versions can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on UEFI-based systems.
