Will secure erasing my SSD bring speeds back to out of box state? Is it bad to do it often, is formatting bad for an SSD?

I want to get my 425mb/s read back to 470mb/s plus.

Also, is heavy file transfer bad for an SSD and are there any disadvantages to using secure state/format very often?

Solution
Yes, a Secure Erase will restore a SSD to a blank, fresh-out-of-the-box state.

A Secure Erase uses 1 P/E (Program/Erase) cycle. A P/E cycle is when every single cell on every NAND chip on your SSD has been written to once. Modern SSDs have a lifespan of 3,000-5,000 P/E cycles.

You really don’t need to S/E your drive more than once a year. You can’t tell the difference in real-life performance between 425MB/s and 470MB/s.

I normally S/E my SSDs once a year. I will S/E them a 2nd time this year when I do a fresh install and upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro in a couple of weeks.

Secure Erasing a SSD and formatting a SSD are 2 different things. Formatting a SSD does not restore Read/Write performance.

You should also never Full format a SSD; you should only Quick format a SSD. A Full format writes to all of the cells on all of the NAND chips of your SSD; which will slightly lower Read/Write performance.

Hi,

I have just come across your last post and have a couple questions as I plan on formatting my Samsung 840 Pro. It currently has a copy of Win 7 64bit installed and I need to format it for a fresh install of the same copy of windows. My questions are,

1. If i need to run a secure erase, which program is best?
2. Is SE carried out whilst in windows and do i then just install windows as normal?
3. If so, during installation, do i just select the drive and hit install and not format?

Thanks and look forward to your reply.

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town on vacation.

1.) The Samsung Magician software that came with your 840 Pro has a Secure Erase feature.
2.) No, you can't SE while it is in Windows. You will have to use Samsung Magician to create a bootable USB thumb drive or CD/DVD drive. You will then boot to the USB or CD and then SE the SSD.
3.) Correct, you can let Windows automatically format the drive during the installation process.

Thanks for getting back to me. I did have a look at Samsung Magician and will be SE'ing this evening. Hopefully it all runs smoothly.
