My logitech mouse worked for about a week before failing; then continued to work in a different USB port for another three weeks. I just bought a MS mouse to replace it, but it is not working through any of the USB ports. By "not working", I mean that the system does not acknowledge them at all.

The ports work fine with wired devices (like transferring files from my phone); and the mice work fine on other computers (I've only tested the logitech one, but have no reason to believe the MS one doesn't also work). It's an HP laptop running Windows 7 x64.

Someone over here suggested I "delete" the USB hubs in the device manager.
http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/147381-Windows-does-not-recognise-mouse
When I disabled (not deleted) the first, I got a BSOD mentioning something about USB at the top. After restarting in safe mode; reenabling that USB hub; shutting down; and waiting a few minutes before restarting, the older, logitech mouse was reinstalled.

So there's that. I'll have to remember next time I see it that the BSOD can be a sign of recovery.

PS. What the heck is that dropdown just below here? "Add a solution" makes some sense, but none of the other options do...
