q9550 @ 3.6 with a gtx470. Upgrade processer or graphics card for Battlefield 4?

If i upgrade the card to one capable to play on ultra will it just be bottle necked by the q9550? 1920x1080

Upgrade neither. The performance increase you may (or may not) see won't be worth the cost (my opinion).

I second this. Am still rocking an overclocked Q9550 with a Radeon HD 6970, playing at 1980x1200, and everything still plays fine.
Some of the latest games will need some settings turned down a bit to maintain high FPS.

The Q9550 has to be the best CPU I've ever owned. It's an amazing chip that just keeps on giving

I have 2 pc's both with gtx 670's . one with a i7 2700k and the other one with a Q9550 core 2 quad. The q9550 not so rockin, it runs battlefield 4 much slower than the i7 2700k. thinking of upgrading Q9550 to new platform. in intensive action frames drop much lower with core two quad Q9550.

3.66 GHz (431 x 8.5) for daily use.
running it on an asus maximus ii formula. had a dfi lanparty jr before the asus and could only run it at 3.4 GHz stable with that motherboard until it blew.

Upgrade to an AMD GPU. Mantle will run nicely on that CPU of yours. Get something like an R9 270. Should perform nicely.

I run Battlefield 4 on preset Ultra, 64 people online in server, with drops to 30 FPS in action, to 60 FPS without the action.
My rig:
Q9550 @ 3,67ghz, 4GB DDR2 OC'ed @ 1100mhz 5-5-5-15 (another 4GB is underway!), 2x GTX470 SLI (runs with Hyper-SLI hack) stock speed at the moment.
CPU load while playing Battlefield 4: around 80%
GPU load while playing Battlefield 4: around 90%
Comparison:
2x GTX470 performs roughly the same as 1x GTX770.
So you will have a lot of benefit from a faster GPU.
The Q9550 if overclocked is fast enough for recent high end videocards.
