I have an old dimension 4700 with 2x 256mb sticks of ddr2-400 installed. Should I add 2 more sticks of 1gb ddr2-400 for a total of 2.5gb? Or just take the existing ram out and use 2x 1gb ddr2-533 sticks for a total of 2gb? (at a slightly faster speed)

Solution
From what I understand if you mix RAM modules with different speeds the RAM will only be as fast as the slowest sticks. If there is a noticeable difference in the speed then go with the 2 x 1GB configuration. The specs of all sticks should be the same if you plan to use four (with the possible exception being speed). Have you checked to make sure the computer will support this configuration? From a look at the service manual (ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-4700_service%20manual_en-us.pdf) it appears as though it will since it maxes out at 4GB.
