ok I'll try to be short. I'm running an older Dell XPS 720. Its the basic platform with an upgraded video card a PNY GTX 260 video card, and running Win 7 64 bit. The problem is this.... for about 6 months this machine was running GREAT! then I decided to give it a spring cleaning which mostly consisted of removing the side panel, video card, audio card, etc and vacuuming out the dust and small debris that has accumulated in the months past... So I put everything back to its orginal place, and fire the machine up, and start to notice that it starts freezing up, whether I'm using IE or just letting it sit idle, the machine continues to freeze randomly. after removing the cards, RAM, etc and restarting, the problem remains the same. I was planning on upgrading to a new 1TB HD anyways, so I decided to take advantage of this time and add the 1TB HD and reinstall win7 64, however I noticed by going through my BIOS, that only 4 of 8GB of RAM is being detected (slots 1&3 to be more precise). This concerns me right away, so I go out and buy 2 sets of 2GB sticks and go through the motions of replacing the RAM, still the BIOS recognizes 4GB of RAM. At this point, I've installed win7 64bit, have ran windows update a few times, and now the freezing has started to occur once again. This XPS once ran extremely well, and now after a routine cleaning, its gone completely sideways... can anyone help me revive this beast? Thanks

Solution
Could have just ended up with bad RAM slots, maybe some static electricity or something hit the system. Using a vacuum, unless it's one made for electronics, is not too good for computers, they can build up some static. Check for a BIOS update from Dell and install it if there is one. Another thing to try if there is no update is to reset the BIOS (unplug PC, take out the CMOS battery for about 10 seconds), check again.

Thanks for the reply. there was a BIOS update which was flashed prior to all of this going south. like I said before, this machine was running fine until I cleaned it. I've since taken each stick of RAM out and plugged it into the number 1 slot, and all have been recognized, I did this for a good stick to each slot. 1,2, and 3 all showed the 2 GB stick, only on 4 did no stick show up. so I think it might be a bad slot all of a sudden. Too bad because I just don't think its worth getting a new mother board, but I hate to see this desktop go... It ran really good, and was really strong up until this point. any other suggestions?
