I'm trying to connect a Dell Inspiron laptop to an external monitor. The laptop only has a HDMI port and the screen has a VGA output. I have a HDMI to VGA converter but nothing is coming up on the external screen. My laptop, however, can detect the external screen. So confused!

Your laptop can detect it because it sees the device plugged into the HDMI port (the converter)

You can't/shouldn't be able to convert HDMI to VGA... you can convert HDMI to DVI easily.

What HDMI to VGA converter do you have.

The converter is a Camac HDMI to VGA Cable Adapter

You really can't tell just by looking at it, as far as I know. It's usually listed, but that adapter doesn't specify whether it is or isn't.

It might not be, so all I can really suggest is to try it with another device with HDMI output, or buy another adapter that specifically states that it is an active converter.

Appartently the adapter I have is an active one - do you know if there is any way that I can force the signal to be sent to the monitor even if it doesn't think there is anything to pick it up? I ask because in looking for a solution online I've come across a lot of Raspberry Pi users talking about changing settings to force the signal.... As you might have guessed I don't really know anything about computers so this is merely speculation.
