My pc died, so I have taken out the hard drive so I can still access the contents. What do I need to convert it into an external drive for my laptop. I had a converter cable that was supposed to be IDE/SATA to USB, that worked with an old drive, but there is nowhere to connect it to on the Hitachi drive. I am a female, blonde pensioner so I need all the help I can get!!

If the cable you have is both IDE and SATA, it pretty much HAS to fit the hard drive, there are no other interfaces commonly used, most of the other ones are for high end workstations and servers (SCSI and SAS drives).

Is the drive from a laptop? Many of those could have a converter for the drive connections that needs to be removed.

The drive is from a desktop, I'll check but I don't think there was anything I could remove, there only seem to be 2 adjacent slots, one with 7 and the other with 15 gold connection points not pins and there are two corresponding 'plugs/sockets' on straps in the box.
I was hoping someone could guide me towards some kind of sleeve that I could just plug into my laptop with a usb lead.
