I updated my 7300GT GC 20 months ago to a HD6850. A few days ago PC would not start in morning but works OK with the 7300GT GC.
The HD6850 is under warranty and I received from Gigabyte a refurbished and tested replacement HD6850 GC but it doesn't work either.
I think the PCIE-16 slot and motherboard and HD6850 are all OK but that the HD6850 is not making full contact on all of the pins in the PC IE_16 slot but the 7300GT does.
What do I do?
Can the PCIE-16 contacts be cleaned?

Hmmm, Whats your full system specs? (include the PSU and mobo please)

Mainly I have a couple of theories.

Obviously insufficient power, either from the PCI-E 6/8pin or the mobo slot itself. Though thats unlikely.

It might also be a problem with the slot, maybe having a bit of dust or something as you said, that could be the case. If you have another PCI-E slot you could try that. (Its not a problem if a x16 card goes into a x8 slot.)

I don't know how you would go about cleaning the mobo pins but the GPU pins ought to be able to be cleaned with a bit of rubbing alcohol.
