No picture or sound on LCD TV through VGA to HDMI Converter

I have purchased a VGA to HDMI converter and leads to connect my 38'' Panasonic Viera LCD TV to my Toshiba satellite laptop. However after connecting everything I cant get any picture or sound on the TV. I have tried recommended resolutions for windows 7, but to no avail, I know the converter is working as I plugged in my friends Acer laptop and on boot up the Acer logo appeared on the TV but as the laptop fired up the picture went off and I couldn't get any further. I know its something i,m not doing, but what, I don't know please help...

I have selected extended monitor and another monitor but after reading some of the posts on the forum I may not have restarted the laptop after each time would this have an effect?
