ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series keeps crashing

Hello,

Up until recently I have had no problems with my PC, which is about 6 years old now. However a few days ago while playing a video game my screen tore up with vertical bars and small blocks of random coloring appeared. My game then crashed and windows gave me a pop-up saying that my display drivers had crashed and that it had been reset to work again.

The problem persisted however, crashing my game every few minutes. Now I'm also having trouble loading images and watching videos online, resulting in images only half-loading and the screen tearing up into weird colors every few seconds while watching videos.

I have removed and reinstalled my graphics drivers, performed system restore and rebooted a few times, nothing worked. I really like to play my video games so I hope someone can help me out!

A problem that started occuring around the same time is that a lot of the .exe files I've recently downloaded give me an error saying that the 'file has been corrupted' or something similar.

I don't really know what PC specs I should post, but I'm running 64-bits Vista, graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry for what is perhaps a newbie question, but do you mean I should vacuum my pc? I haven't done that in a while, so you might right.

First thing I would do is ensure that the cooler is not full of dust.

Cans of compressed gas(air dusters) area good way to remove built up dust without taking the cards cooler off(NOT RECOMMENDED for users who are not used to it anyway.)

Other than that a power issue or more likely the card is just failing would be the next guesses.

So, cleaned the pc and it did nothing, but ever since my gf came over and started to have exactly the same problems on her Macbook, I am pretty sure it's not my pc. Been thinking it has to be the router not properly receiving packages or something like that (not that good with routers). Anyone who can confirm or deny that this could be my problem? And perhaps a solution? Thanks!

I do not think the router can in any way effect your system stability(ok some systems do not handle broadcast storms well, but most routers/switches do not have this issue any more. Ohh the fun).

Your web browser can effect stability, but it would be a bit of a long shot. That would not effect games.

Does her system still do the same thing when she is at home? Is she on battery power all the time? If not, try battery power to see if the power was an issue(in honesty it may be bad luck.).

Yes. We don't live together and at home she had no problems. Ever since she's been staying here, the exact same symptoms have occured on both our phones, laptop and pc. The exact symptoms are: images loaded are sometimes distorted (weird colors and blocks), videos loading only partially and crashing sometimes (Netflix, YouTube) and downloaded files giving a 'this file is corrupt' error sometimes. (multiple downloads of different files) Games like League of Legends and World of Warcraft also crash, but usually the graphics just go weird for a while first (it seems like the polygons stretch out in weird ways)

You need to get your place checked out. That is WAY too many devices(half of them on battery power almost eliminating a "power" issue) picking up some kind of interference.

Network can cause disconnects and buffer issues on video(sometimes it may look like blocks of color).

This is what a bad video card looks like for sure.

Nukemaster, my game looks like what you posted. Stupid question - are videocards used for loading simple images on a website like Imgur?

Rolli, I don't really have offline games or video files on my computer from times before my files started being corrupt.

You have mentioned something could be up with power supply; I live in a house where 4 people each own a pc, laptop and smartphone (student house), could this have to do with any of this? (it's never been a problem before, lived here for a year now)

PS forgot to mention I have received a blue screen error twice, right after my games going weird.

Since everything went to hardware accelerated(Windows Vista and newer), yes for the most part your video card has a hand in everything you see.

You can disable hardware acceleration(aero) on your system, but your browser may still use it. This said. Vista/7's aero should work perfectly fine on a 4800 series card.

If all devices plugged in had issues, I would kind of suspect power as a possibility, but battery operated devices do not rely on the rooms power(only to charge).

So if you take that Macbook over to a friends place, all problems will go away? I am only concerned with crashing and video game corruption(not so much internet speed and steaming vidoes stopping as shared internet can cause that issue).

What happens if you disconnect your system from the network and use it, do things work perfectly that way?

Asked my roomie - he has had the exact same symptoms lately! Although he doesn't game, so these issues might be unrelated. Can you help me further with the router issues? Will we just have to get a new one?

If your internet connection is not the great. you could have buffer and other issues. I mean you have quite a number of people on the same network.

You can try a new router, but it may well be an isp issue for video buffering issues, but game corruption can not be caused by the network.

i been having the same problem. i have the 4800 series too. its the driver or the card itself. nothing to do with a router. i updated my driver, watched the temp of the card cleaned the iside of the computer. it worked for a little while 9few days) then boom! all little green squares then lines of color, then green bars and then blank screen with a rainbow of colors than a crash and recovery. sometimes i have to reboot 3 times or more to stop the squares or lines from appearing. only happens when i lok at pics or videos

Hi I have just has a similar experience with a Dell XPS with Radeon 4800. Machine has been fine since 2009. Last week Far Cry 3 went first but then other programmes fell over eg whilst preparing Facebook photos, then the machine would barely start in normal Windows. Strange big green stripes appeared.

Used safe mode and the errors are to do with video device.

I tried cleaning the machine. and the ATI card.

It seemed to work with Excel but crashed as soon as the Graphics for the Main Menu for Far Cry 3 started. Whether the card has gone bad or not is now the main question - it seems likely. Any thoughts welcome

If you can test it in another system you will get a definitive answer.

If you see garbage in safe mode changes are its failing because safe mode should not even use the cards hardware features. You may also see artifacts in the bios. That would be another sign of a failing card.

If the temperatures check out, I an not sure what else can be done.

The answer to the is Catalyst Control Center. The ATI Radeon 4800 series is old, and it is no longer supported with up to date drivers, and requires "Legacy" drivers, which work absolutely fine. The problem lies in the fact that CCC, the control center, updated at some point in time to run the next series of up to date cards, and the 4800 series drivers are not compatable with the new and updated Catalyst Control Center. If you visit the AMD website, you can find the "Legacy" drivers for your card, and this is all you need. REMOVE Catalyst Control Center from your PC entirely.

Also, if you are downloading a lot of .exe files, you are probably downloading virus's. Very very very very very very few files that you will download will be .exe files. At the time of your posting, 2013, if you were downloading the install of a new game, it isn't to be a .exe file. Its going to be a packaged ZIP file containing the install wizard. The fact that your getting a "file has been corrupted" message is almost 100% chance you have downloaded and opened a virus of some kind. Find and run some free anti-malware program (Malware-Bytes Anti Malware is a good choice) and see what it finds.

Lastly, blue screens of death saying the graphics card crahsed usually points to the fact that your G card has died. There is no such thing as a "dying" graphics card. It either works perfect, or has problems. Please remember there are precious metals in your computer, such as the sodder contact points and a few copper components. If these become to hot, they can un-sodder them selves, corode, and so on.

If you have virus's, a system restore will do nothing. Be more careful of the files you download in the future. Most virus's, once opened, will "build a wall" around themselves inside your computer, making your computer think they are important windows files. This is the same thing that anti virus programs do to virus's they cant get rid of, they quarintine them on your computer, meaning windows "built a wall" around the file, taking aways its permission's (like its permission to read other files, make changes to things, and so on.)

Hope this helps
