Do I have to activate my Windows XP, even though I have had it for over two and a half years?

I have had my computer for quite a while and have had no problems. The other day, I went to log in and after about 45 seconds of nothing, it told me that there have been hardware changes and I need to activate Windows. I clicked no and proceeded to log on. When I got in, the taskbar was grey and squared instead of blue and rounded. I also couldn't change it back and my sound wasn't working.

There are two instances in which the hardware had been changed.

Recently: I bought a USB sound driver. It broke, so I bought a new one.

Over a year ago: My computer got fried in a thunderstorm and a friend put some new parts in it and managed to keep all of our stuff.

In the second, there was some significant change, but I doubt it would take over a year for Windows to recognize the changes.

Do I have to (re)activate it, or is there a way around it?

Solution
Activation is a simple process that usually takes less than 5 minutes of your time. If you cannot activate online, you will be given a toll free number to call where an automated system will talk you through the process. To answer your question, there are alternatives, but all are far more trouble than just reactivating.
