Hi all, I am looking at my first build.

But I`m not sure of what will be the best budget mother board, I have been looking at the Asus F2A85-M Motherboard.

Would these be a good match.

Thanks

For a first build, I would go with this instead. You want to have an ATX motherboard so that you have the maximum upgradability options. If you get a Micro-ATX you will have to soon replace the motherboard and spend more money overall. Instead, save the money later for an upgrade to the 8350.

Ah thanks this makes sense :)

What other low cost boards would you all recommend.

I should have said, but this build is not so much for games but for video and photo editing.

Thanks again

Thanks I`ve had a look at that board.

I`m finding this all very confusing :)

Mind you I`m currently using a 7 year old DELL and need to build from scratch.

I`ve figured on a decent small factor desk top case with a quality power supply as it will need to be quite.

Its just the board and processor that has me stumped.

What is your overall budget and what are you using the computer for?

This is what I would do.

It has an ATX motherboard for maximum upgradability options.

1866 clocked RAM for greater speed.

Full tower for maximum upgradability and airflow.

Reliable PSU to allow for more advanced components.

Cheers thanks.

I went and ordered an atx board, it had all the bells and whistles but then I could not find a case I was happy with so cancelled.

The system needs to be fairly small and compact, this is the case I have in mind.

I`ve just placed an order for a Gigabyte uATX, its only sata 2 but it is an AM3+ board and should cover most of my needs.

You were right on the nail with the power supply, I`d been looking at 5 to 600 watt units.

If you want a mid-tower, go with this one. It is a good case with the "bells and whistles".

Hi again and thanks for all your replies.

I now have the motherboard and case, I opted for the Silverstone in the end.

Hopefully I will be ordering the processor later this week.

I still can`t decide between a six core and an 8 core from AMD.

Is there really that much of a difference between a Bulldozer and a Pile Driver, and do you think I will notice much of a difference between a six core and an 8 core.

I don`t do a lot of games but I do a fair bit of photo editing, and some video editing as well.

If you can afford an 8320 or an 8350, that will far outperform the 6300. If you get an 8120 or 8150 it performs better but I'm not sure the performance difference is worth the price (it's about a 1-5 second difference in video encoding and photoshop).

True, the difference shouldn't be very noticeable.

I went with a six core 6350 in the end, only because it was going for what I thought was a very good price, I can always upgrade this later.

The build went a lot easier than expected, I`ll still had a couple of items to get, an SSD and a hard drive but ended up pinching the HDD from an external drive.

A couple of strange things I noticed, not that there problems at all.

1) During the build I used an old PS2 keyboard, when I switched the PC off I found it was still getting power.

2) I tested the video converting speed using freemaker video, on the new PC it took 22 seconds for a 90sec file, on my old PC it took 3 minutes 59 seconds (some software and settings, same 90 sec file)

3) during the video conversion the CPU jumped up to as high as 11.3 GHZ from 3.9 GHZ and settled back down to 3.9 once the video had been rendared, I have no idea if this is normal or not.
