4770k...if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen (NEED HELP!)

Before i begin the components i have that matter are: Switch 810 with a billion fans so no case heat issues there, Maximus VI Hero 1150 mobo, 4770k, 8GB Kingston HyperX @ 8-8-8-24-1t, and a Kraken X60 liquid cooler. I cannot get this CPU past 4.3ghz. I find this pathetic being that i have one of the best all-in-one liquid coolers with a 280mm rad which i feel is enough for a good overclock.

The things i've changed:

Main UEFI BIOS screen: "Normal" instead of "Optimized"

Advanced Settings:

AI Overclock Tuner: XMP Profile
CPU Core Ratio: 43
Cache Ratio: 39
CPU Core Voltage: 1.32v
Core Dram Voltage: 1.65v
Ram Latency - 8-8-8-24-1
Memory Frequency - DDR3 1600mhz
CPU Spread Spectrum - Enabled
CPU Power Phase Control - Extreme
CPU Power Duty Control - Extreme
VRM Spread Spectrum - 350
Load-Line Calibration - Level 5

Any tips on what i can do to get this thing past 4.3ghz while keeping the heat down? I mean the Kraken X60 is supposed to be one of the best all-in-one liquid coolers with a 280mm radiator (using Prolimatech PK-1 paste) and i'm getting really hot readings. 48-50 celsius @ idle and i haven't even tried benchmarking it yet for fear of frying the chip (Btw i don't really care for benchmarking...so long as i can game and run other programs at once and not have the system crash is fine for me). I've just played graphic intensive games which run fine. So far i am not impressed with the Haswell upgrade at all. My 2600k is faster w/ a Phanteks cooler at 4.7ghz. Windows Index: 7.9. My 4770k setup, Windows Index: 7.4. Very frustated. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't even think about checking for the newest bios thanks. The other poster is right...i forget what the percentages are but i think it was like 30% won't be able to go over 4.3ghz? I forget what thread that was. I'll update the BIOS and see what happens. Otherwise i'll keep tinkering and let you guys know. Thanks.
 


So are the high temps your primary concern? 48-50*C. while idle is really hot! What do you see while gaming?

Suggestions: Disable Spread Spectrum and lower Cache Ratio to 35, but I doubt if either of these will have a major benefit.

Thanks Yogi i'll try that. The Shin-Etsu G751 just arrived so i'm hoping it makes a difference. I'm also going to try different methods of applying the T.I.M. but i feel the dot in the center is the best method. To each his own though.
 


Check out the beginning of this new review at THG, it shows an excellent representation of your core alignment under the heat spreader of your 4770K and the dot in the center may not be adequate, something for your consideration.

Would you list the exact model #s of your Kingston memory modules?

Your CPU voltage is too high, but that may be because the DDR3 voltage is 1.65v vs the 4770Ks design specifications to run with DDR3 1.50v modules.

You really should have purchased 1.50v DDR3 memory modules, but since you didn't the modules possibly could be run at a lower speed and lower voltage.

Without getting to technical these are things I learned. Leave just about everything in auto after loading optimized defaults. Set your cache turbo multiplier ratio to 35 maximum. I needed Level 8 LLC to enhance the voltage settings and ASUS has some really good auto rules in the bios.
Set your overclock to manual and lower the memory modules to 1333 @ 1.5volts until you hit your optimal overclock Vid/Vcore and VRING Vrin. You want to bump the voltages .1v @ a time. It is time consuming. If you increase your Vrin you might be able to set a lower vcore/vid setting Those are the 2 things I suggest to increase and decrease as you are fine tuning your overclock at a time. Read guides you can't just jump into Haswell like Sandybridge and have instant results, because a lot of these chips will vary in performance.

I advise to to check your processor power management power settings in windows and set the min and max from 5% to 100% cpu. Do a low level overclock maybe and set your adaptive voltage to the manual overclock setting you achieved. Turn on cstates and eist and check your voltages an temps from here.

Once you start seeing the voltages dip in adaptive mode hopefully you will have a cpu idling between 28c to 33c. That is where I am at depending on the ambient temperature ATM. It has been a little warmer where I live so they get a little higher at idle for me. anyways good luck and feel your frustration. I at first wondered why the hell I upgraded my ASUS z77 and my 2600k for the 4770k without getting the results I wanted initially. Now I am happy that I did with a better understanding of how to Overclock my 4770k resulting in a much smoother faster PC.

Nice! If I turn HT off I can hit higher clocks but no way with this 4770k unless I want to have the fire dept over for a visit. My 2600k I could get a max of 4.8ghz but 4.6 was the most realistic for that chip with the cooling I had in a old closed case. You struck the lotto on a nearly hundred dollar cheaper CPU if you can actually use it on those frequencies.

Thanks for the reply trancefreak. So i switched from the PK-1 paste to the Shin-Etsu G751 and BAM. Temps all of a sudden dropped dramatically. Remember before i said it was hovering around 48-50 celsius. It's now 28-30 celsius. I just don't get it. I've re-applied both pastes many times using different methods. I guess the Shin-Etsu really is that good of a paste if it was recommended by NZXT. Still doesn't help me get over 4.3ghz but at least i don't have to worry about my temps.
