HI,

I've been playing Battlefield 4 Beta for a few days now and after experiencing poor FPS in 64 player matches, I found out that my CPU and GPU are not being maxed out at all. My CPU usage doesn't go beyond 73% at any given time and the maximum GPU load I've seen is also in the 70's but my GPU memory usage (VRAM) goes up to 97% at times averaging around 94-95%. I've made sure that all my CPU's cores are being used whilst playing and that there are no throttling issues. I've also made sure that my CPU and GPU temps are not too high at any given time.

Before anyone asks, I do have the latest Nvidia beta drivers and play at 1920x1080.

Following are my PC's specs:
CPU: Intel Core I7 2600 (non k) 3.4GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo
GPU: EVGA GTX 690
RAM: 8GB DDR3 Kingston
HDD: WD 1TB HDD, 7200RPM
Motherboard: Maximus IV Extreme
OS: Windows 7

My question is, what is causing my fps to drop to 40-50 all the time and never stay above 60fps? Is it a CPU bottleneck? A VRAM bottleneck? I don't know.

It's a beta. You can't blame your hardware until the full game is released.

try using newest bios/intel chipset drivers and nvidia driver. in the bios turn off the c states so the cpu wont spin down. in the nvidia control panel turn off power savings.

What you're describing is completely normal. I don't know why it is the way it is, but what you're saying is corroborated precisely by these benchmarks.

Maybe by release it will be a little bit more optimized; in any event you're CPU bottlenecked, but I don't know why.

So is it time to invest in a new CPU? I can get the 3770k without changing my motherboard, unless there's a better value on the 2001 socket boards.

Maybe check you'r ram usage? I remember BF2 hemorrhaged memory in its prime. I wouldn't bother upgrading just yet. 97% of 4Gb Vmem is pretty intense though.. Remember most people don't even have cards with 4Gb mem, i run a 27' 2560x1440 with my 6970 (2Gb) and have never had any issues defaulting to the native res.

My RAM usage is fine, plenty to spare. I'm not sure if spending $3-400 on a new CPU is worth it though.

That could potentially help, but only if you were prepared to put a heavy overclock on it. In any case, I'd wait for the release to see what that brings us.

I guess unless anyone else has a solution that nobody has thought of, I'll wait till release. If, however, performance is still poor after a few weeks post launch, I'll buy a new cpu with Noctua DH-14 fan and overclock to 4.6GHz.
