Have recently upgraded my old 6850 to a 7970. Im currently using a 500W PSU Modxstream Pro which seams to be working fine, however...

the new card needs 2x 8 pin PCI connections and my psu only offers 1x6pin and 1x6+2pin = 6pin and 8pin. An adapter came in the box which allows me to change a 6pin to an 8, i plugged it in and it works fine. Ive managed to play games on ultra and it seams to be running fine. Ive seen people talk about needing a higher PSU but using the calculator im still 150watts below, i guess the question is do i really need to get a new PSU? with 2x8 pin connections? Does it really make a difference?

Thanks

It depends how old your PSU is - these degrade in efficiency over time, and so the values are not as accurate. Use the calculator again, adding on for capacitor aging, and see what it gives you. Usually for a big upgrade, the advice is to get a new PSU if it is more than 2-3 years old, has been used a lot, and the power draw is substantially increased.

I'm surprised that it needs two 8pins to be honest as a 6 and 8 should give a max of 300w. I'd say the only reason it has two 8pins is to supply enough power for very extreme overclocking, so a 6 and 8 with an adapter like you're using now should be fine.
