System requires CMOS reset before it will post/boot

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately I think I know the answer to this but....

System requires me to clear the CMOS before it will post and boot. It will restart fine once I get it working, and I think it will actually boot....unless I leave it off for a while (hours).

When it does boot after a CMOS clearing, the CMOS default settings have the wrong multiplier (38 instead of 34). I have to manually fix that.

Now, it was overclocked to 38 (specs below) - or 3.8GHz for a while. But it would randomly shut down every few days, so I downclocked it. Now I wonder if it reset to 38.

PSU - not the problem.
HDD/software - Not the problem
Memory issue - possible - but unlikely
CPU - possible
MB - very possible.

Thoughts? I have been reluctant to flash it because I am paranoid it will crash during flash.

Does this sound like a borked Main Board?

Opps - forgot specs
Gigabyte Z87 D3HP
Intel 4670K
850 PSU Antec
ATI 7870
16 GB Corsair Vengence black 2x8
Samsung SSD 840 series

Well, I have taken to the BATT dance to reset since the jumper is buried under the video card.....so not sure. I will tell you on the next round.

I think I will risk flashing it because the strange BIOS behavior indicates the MB and well.......that is the eventual next thing to try.

Thanks for the reply

Yeah - so I flashed. Now the multiplier is stuck at 36 in bios (should be 34) and when it boots into windows 8 it is OCed to 3.7 (regardless of what I apply in BIOS) and holds there, no dynamic scaling which it used to do and I see on other Win 8 machines. All I can figure is a new main board. The CPU seems OK (4670K) but is not stable at 3.8 (which is what the main board was doing before). I am at 3.7 right now (lik eit or not) for about 10 minutes and no shut down. It's so bizzare - - like it has it's own mind lol.

This is what I get for jumping in early and jumping in cheap on 4gen intel....lol
