SSD Compatibility Question

I was thinking of purchasing an SSD to improve the performance of my current desktop computer. Yet, I also see a purchase of a great gaming laptop in my future. I really don't want to waste my money on an SSD that would only work for my desktop.

Therefore my question is, if I purchase an SSD for my desktop, would it still work on a laptop? What are the compatibility issues? Is there a size difference? Any clarification on this subject would be great.

Also, I was looking at purchasing this specific SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227977

7mm SSDs fit all three: ultrabooks(thin laptops), regular laptops, and desktops.

9.5mm SSDs fit only regular laptops and desktops, not ultrabooks.

To connect to a desktop, you'll need a desktop bracket to hold the SSD. Some SSDs are bundled with this bracket for the desktop, obviously increasing the cost.

You can use the same SSD on a laptop. Just remember, if you have an ultrabook and a 9.5mm SSD, they're not going to fit.
