The PS3 in general didn't have as many problems as the first generation Xbox 360. However, the phat PS3s are now 4-5 years old, if you get one of the newer ones, so you run the risk of getting one that may not have much life left.

However, like any piece of electronics, it all depends on how well it is taken care of. I have one of the launch 60 GB PS3s that is in pretty good shape, and the only major repair it has needed so far is a replacement laser.
