My dad needs a new tower and has a budget of £300 (not including screen, CD drive, OS or peripherals). I've heard an AMD APU is the best way to go for a build at this budget, but what parts would you advise?

For low-end computing it's pretty much a toss-up. The i3 vs. APU argument really goes to desired functionality. In terms of general computing the i3 will beat the APU. Yet, Intel has yet to compete with the integrated graphics chip on AMD's APUs.

Streaming video, email, general internet, office programs: both are fine.

I would (out of personal bias) go with the Intel Build. You can't beat that power draw, but Minecraft is going to be the upper limit of the Intel chip (in terms of graphics).

But would it be better to go with the intel build for simply the better upgrade route? My little sister might want to play some games at some point so with the intel we could put in a cheapish GPU later?
