Okay, at the end of the month I'm definitely grabbing a new Processor for my PC. Right now I only have an i5-2400, which is quite nice, but I'd like to be able to fiddle around with OCing, so I've decided to upgrade. This PC is going to have 2 GTX 660s in SLI, 16GB 2133Mhz DDR3 G-Skill Sniper Series RAM. However, my biggest issue is, do you think I should go with the 3570k/4570k for the PCI-e 3.0 capabilities, or should I go with something like an 8350 or A10-6800k from AMD since it's cheaper. Is the PCI-e 3.0 actually worth it?

Solution
pci-e 3.0 is a marketing gimmick for current gen gpus. there isn't a gpu in existence which can max out a pci-e 2.0 x16 slot, let alone a pci-e 3.0 slot. Heck a number of gpus still don't max out a pci-e 1.0x16 slot.

you'll need a new motherboard with the AMD, it looks like from your writing that you expect to need a new motherboard for the intel as well.

If you can get those 660s for less then 200 go for your SLi setup. that said, the 7950 (which is much faster then the 660) can be found for $180 these days, and xfire seems to be mostly fixed on single monitor setups. you won't need 16gb of ram... 8 is fine. if 8 lets you get a better gpu to xfire/sli then get 8. cause nothing will make you use 16. Furthermore, ivy bridge...

Furthermore, ivy bridge and piledriver can't really benefit from ram clocked that fast. The only thing on a haswell that will use ram that fast is the igpu, which you won't be using anyway so that throws that out... if you are getting that a10, you'll need the fastest ram you can get your hands on... the igpu will love you, not that you'll use it, the cpu will love it too because of the lack of L3 cache.

I won't need a new motherboard if I go the 3570k Route, since I already have an i5 2400. So since pcie3.0 isn't enough to make a difference in performance, the only thing I'm looking at now is the OC potential of the processor. So, the 3570k looks to be the most promising since I could save money by not having to buy a new mobo.

The only reason I have RAM that fast is because they had the C9 version priced at $60 on newegg at the time. Figured if I'm gonna pay the same amount of money, may as well get the faster RAM.

As for the GPUs, I'll throw that question in another thread under the GPU section so as to not get off topic here.

For the guy asking about my Motherboard model, it's an MSI Z77A-G45

There is really no point in getting an APU if your planinig to add a seperate video card so toss that choice out the door.

A better question is what do you have right now ? that way we can give you a better choice in CPU/MB and maybe video cards.
