Hi Guys

Just completed my new build, however on initial bootup the cpu led turned solid red and the pc would not bootup. After checking all hardware and connections I removed the cpu, cleaned it and did a fresh install.

The pc now seems to boot up fine and I have managed to install windows 8, however each time on start up the cpu led flashes red once as does the vga light and finally the boot device led. All have turned off by the time windows loads up. My case does not have an internal speaker so I can't check that. However i would appreciate it if someone could give any advice on this, are the led's normal or is this cause for concern?

Finally I have installed the operating system on a ssd and when I go to computers on startup I can't see my hdd, is it failing to recognise this? even though I can see it in the bios

All the temps seem normal from what I saw in the bios.

My build for your information:

Motherboard: M5A97 EVO AM3+
CPU: AMD FX-6300
GPU: HIS Radeon HD 7870
Memory: G.Skill ripjaws x CL9 8GB Ram, 1600mhz
Storage: Kingston V300 120GB SSD
Optical drive: Asus 24x
PSU: Seasonic S12II-620
Case: Cooler Master Scout 2

Many thanks in advance for your help.

checked the power connectors, they seem okay. If it was the power connectors wouldn't it just not boot? All driva cables have been checked too. In normal circumstances do the lights not flash at all even on start up?

I would remove the CMOS battery, wait 30-60 seconds, re-install (correct orientation, writing up) and boot up. Your BIOS should prompt you to hit F1, and LED lights should operate normally.

If this solution doesn't work, may need to dig deeper.

I do not have any hands-on knowledge of your particular motherboard; in my experience with similarly-built boards with status LEDs (VGA, RAM indicators) the LEDs should light up upon startup, but extinguish should no problem be found. I would imagine your motherboard's manual would describe the correct operation of these LEDs.

That said, there are some multi-colored status LEDs that will flash Red upon startup, then stay solid Green once the board has run it's own diagnostics.

If your hardware is functioning normally, resetting CMOS by removing the battery should have the LEDs operating as intended.

Agreed! Some motherboard LEDs, specifically for hard drives vary in color depending on the status of the hard disc drive. For example, some LEDs flicker when the HDD is working (i.e. discs are spinning, info is beind read or written), while others stay green. Red is normal during boot-up.

Check your motherboard manual for details on this topic :)
