Is this safe? (CPU Cooling)

I just bought a new case and am currently setting it up. I have an asetek 510LC liquid cooler that I had to remove to get my motherboard out of my old case.

Rather than having to clean off the CPU and reapply thermal paste, would I be able to just leave the liquid cooler off? This would only for a about a week while I await my new cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

The one thing I don't want to do is fry my CPU.

Just stick the cooler back on with the old paste. Even if it's a little solid/crusty just make sure it has the same orientation and the "pieces" of paste should all "line up". Crusty paste is better than nothing - it still conducts which is all we want it to do.

He's looking for alternatives without getting new paste, getting new paste is not an alternative.

Will it be less effective? Yes. but with a water cooler, he will not be overheating even if there was NO paste at all. Unless he's overclocking, which in this situation he shouldn't.
