Computer is making strange noise

OS Windows 7
CPU Intel i3-3220 @3.30gGHz
Ram 8GB
GPU Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 1GB
HD Western Digital Blue 1TB
SSD Kingston 120GB
PSU Rosewill Capstone 650-m
Mobo Gigabyte GA-B75M

I recorded a video to demonstrate the sound I'm hearing. It sounds like it's my hard drive but it sounds like it's coming from the CPU fan. All the temps are fine, I ran tests on the Western Digital drive, did memory tests, everything I can think of. My only real answer is that the CPU fan is starting to go bad. It's getting to the point where the computer is sometimes unresponsive for 5-10 seconds. I already ordered a new CPU fan so it should be here tomorrow. Just didn't know if somebody had an answer.

Here's a link to the video

I agree.
- it sounds EXACTLY like a fan failing.
- I also recommend the CM 212 EVO though installation is a slight hassle as you'll want to remove the motherboard etc.

A better cooler would not only be quieter even when just idling (surfing web), but far quieter when gaming.

If you haven't done so you'll want a FAN PROFILE setup (motherboard software) regardless of what cooler you get. Most motherboards can only control PWM fans (the EVO is).

I'm kind of on a budget so I went with the cheapest one. Rosewill RCX-Z90

I just don't understand why programs are sometimes freezing. My CPU temp is never above 35 on idle. Maybe the fan will fix those problems, I won't know until tomorrow

I have the Evo in my wishlist. It's probably my next fan after the RCX-Z90

If your PC is freezing and the temperature is fine then it's not related to CPU overheating. It's a completely different issue.

Since it's not crashing but simply becoming unresponsive it's difficult to say what the issue is. Here's some quick troubleshooting:

1) Create an Ubuntu Live DVD, boot and run from it (not hard drive).

2) If your system never freezes then you have no hardware problems (except maybe the drive Windows is on).

3) If the system DOES FREEZE running the Ubuntu DVD then you have a hardware problem (RAM, drive, graphics card or motherboard possibly)

I think I figured out that it's one of my top fans making the noise. Nothing much I can really do about it. That still doesn't explain why videos and web pages are freezing. I never updated the motherboard before, maybe that's why?

If your PC was working fine, then suddenly wasn't you don't need to flash the BIOS on your motherboard.

There are several components which could be responsible, even software though it's probably a hardware issue

1) RAM (run Memtest or Windows Memory Diagnostic)
2) motherboard
3) CPU
4) Power Supply
5) drive
6) graphics card

Unfortunately, most troubleshooting requires a part to swap but this is generally were you are at.
