Hi, is there a way to back up windows update so that I do not have to download it again after a clean install (in case windows crashes). I have a slow internet connection and its a headache to re download all the updates.
I am running windows 7 ultimate 32 bit.
Please help..

I think Win 7 and 8 do have their own imaging options, but I like using 3rd party utilities and boot off an external disk to run the image.

I have not tried the built-in Windows recovery tools for imaging.

I know how to backup windows but not sure if the updates are included in that.

The first thing Windows Backup does is create a system image (unless you explicitly turn it off) that can be used to restore the system back to that point in time. A new image is created every so often. It's no speed demon however (6-8 hours on a 400GB drive only half full).

Use a cloning/imaging utility, setup the system how you like it, then clone it. Put the backup away, next time you need to revert back, image the system with the image. Use a file backup procedure to backup any new files you create so when you re-image the drive again you can also copy back any new files.

I like to do a base system clone with the operating system and all my programs, then do a separate backup of my files to keep the image size down and also to easily make changes to the file backups without the need to re-image every time you save something.
