I tried to increase the RAM to 2 Gb. First memory module (Kingston) did not work. The notebook refused to start up after power-on. Then installed a Crucial 2 Gb module, same problem. It cannot be that both modules are faulty. Putting back the original 1 Gb works fine.
I was very careful to use the correct specs (as advised by the seller).

What are my options?

Problem solved. The vendor suggested I flash the latest BIOS. I found the BIOS updates on the Acer site, did the flash and now it all works fine and the notebook is again very fast!
