Looking to build a gaming PC and was wondering what graphics card I should pick I have looked at these two but will consider any others around the same price range the build is as follows (not fully decided if I am going to go with this build yet however):
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor (£83.99 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£23.00 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard (£58.54 @ CCL Computers)
Memory: Patriot Viper Xtreme Series, Division 2 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£59.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£46.68 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: Undecided

Solution
Get the MSI GTX 760 TF OC. It's only around $250
It has great cooling and factory overclocked as well.
And it has really good capabilities in terms of overclocking.

Look at these epic benchmark results:

It beats the 670, 7950,7970, + the 770 (or almost on par).

probably because the 7950 is under $200, and the new r9-280x/r9-280 are just straight up rebrandings of a 7970/7950, only more expensive then what he could get a 7950.

why pay for a 7970 with a new name on the box, when he can get a 7970 or 7950 for less money because it has the "old" name on the box.

the 760 question is an easier one to answer. you can get 7970s for the price of a 760 today. you can get a 7950 for the price of a 660 today. why pay $70 more for 10% more performance when an overclocked 7950 will match a 760 (depending of course)... and if he wanted to pay $70 more for a gpu he could get a 7970 and kick the pants off the 760 for the same price.

my only concern with the op's build is his choice of motherboard. judging by the aftermarket cpu cooler i assume he's planning on overclocking... which that motherboard isn't going to do well. swapping that board to an m5a97 R2.0 would be a better option.

I understand what your saying but I was asking the OP. The GTX 670 is a terrible idea at current prices so I thought I would ask why. The r9-280x is going for around $300, the cheapest 7970 is $300, and the 7970 Ghz edition is $350 on newegg today. Its true the r9-280x is mostly a rebranding but performance wise it sits between the stock 7970 and the 7970 Ghz edition so its a pretty good value considering its basically the same price as the 7970.

I can get a MSI GTX 760 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card for £184
or
a MSI Overclocked Radeon HD 7950 AMD Graphics Card - 3GB for £174
or
Zotac GeForce GTX 670 OC Edition NVIDIA Graphics Card - 2GB for £191
considering the prices and performance of the cards which do you think would be the best for me? And the cooling looks pretty poor on them all but i'm no expert so I wouldn't know for sure. and the benchmarks go against what you are saying http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2013/06/25/nvidia-geforce-gtx-760-2gb-review/1

Thanks for the help will consider buying that motherboard when I get around to building it. Do you know of any affordable pc cases with good, quiet cooling or a case and fan set up that would go with this build?

You can do that with the 760 as well & achieve better performance over higher models.
It's not like it's non-overclokable.
Just look at the benchmarks above.

And I'm not sure where you're getting your prices.
But on Newegg , 7950s cost around $240 while 7970s cost $300-$360.
GTX 760s only cost $250-$260.

___________
Anyways, if you have the money, I advice you to switch to an Intel Mobo.
i5 3570k + z77 Mobo or i5 4670k + z87 mobo.
A bit more expensive but worth every penny.

AMD builds are only for low/tight budgets. But still great
Or if you can only squeeze a bit more, go for 8350 at least.

Also, If you're looking for a case around that price, I suggest cooler master haf 912.

Having a last minute change of mind is it worth spending £25 more than the gtx760 to get the new R9 280x http:// ? I have looked at gaming benchmarks and this card seems to have 20% better performance in most tasks than the GTX 760 in most applications. Also would the build still be compatible?
