Ok i've got my eye on the Asus GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II OC NVIDIA Graphics Card which im snapping up for an impressive £240.

Im a little concerned though as it takes up 3 pci slots and looking into my rig it looks like this means the fans will be pointing at the bottom of the case with mere millimeters of space, is this relatively normal for a mid sized tower?

Im a little concerned about overheating, has anyone else got a set up like this?

It's an Akasa Zen Case (quite old budget case) and a gigabyte z77-d3h board.

Thanks! :)

What Case? What Motherboard? Normally the PCIe X16 slot on ATX boards is close to the top of the 6 -7 slots on there.

Your primary PCIe X16 ver 3.0 slot is number 6 from bottom, the lower slot is PCIe X16 ver 2.0 that runs on X4 speed and not suitable for the card. Using the correct slot it will block the two PCIe X1 slots under the X16 slot but will not be close to the bottom of the case.

How stupid am i? I hadn't noticed that slot. I have my dated 550ti pluged into the PCIe x4 slot, will that be hampering it's performance? Last board a bought was 5 years ago and only had one slot for a gpu lol. Thanks for pointing that out rolli, much appreciated.

Yep most likely the X4 slot is slowing down the 550Ti.

I don't know about your specific case, mobo, nor about the GTX 680, BUT I happen to have both an ASUS DirectCU II 580 and an ASUS DirectCU II 780 in my desktops. I cannot contribute any useful information about |PCIe slot usage as my particular mobo/case combinations have not created/exhibited any such difficulties (i.e slots / veritcal stacking).

However, I felt it might be useful to make you aware or the additional problem of front-to-rear clearance,

I DID have to shulle my SSDs and HDDs to different drive bays to clear horizontal space for the GTXs in both desktops. Plus, I DO have to somewhat abide by an installion sequence to account for the interference that remains between the GTXs and the drive bay itself (procedure: GTX first, then slide in the drive bay using the power of your favorite swear word).

Of course, "your own mileage will necessarily vary greatly". For the record, I have the GTX 580 in an Antec P182 and the GTX 780 in and Antec P183.

( Yeah, right: I am an Antec Performance One freak as well as an ASUS DirectCu freak. Now, would admitting to having an EVGA GTX 760 on yet another my desktops make up for it? No? Oh well... )
