AMD 6970 - Driver Crash - No Image

Hey guys. I was overclocking my AMD 6970 and I believe I might of killed it but I'd like an expert confirm it. I guess it's worth noting I have the Rosewill RBR1000-M 1000W PSU.

The first unfortunate mistake I made was using the latest beta drivers and an outdated Asus GPU Tweak software (the newer ones didn't allow voltage adjustment).

At every 10Mhz increment I was using Heaven benchmark to see the performance. Midway in overclocking I decided to switch to MSI Kombustor because it's easier to spot the artifacts (second big mistake). The odd thing was that every time I hit ~82C, my computer would freeze and drivers would crash. I reverted it back to stock clocks and see if the issue would be similar and yes, my drivers would crash the minute it hit 82C. This might have even explained why my BF4 beta would occasionally stop responding while playing as well (although I cannot confirm that is the reason). I had the fan left at automatic speeds but it never passed at 50% speed (I assume 82C, although undesirable for long periods, is still relatively safe) so I don't think it overheated.

Anyway, the stupid me decided to try it again. I put it back at 970Mhz clock and 5700Mhz memory at 1.255V and run Kombustor once again. No surprise, computer completely froze at 82C. I forced restarted it by holding the power down. However, now I get absolutely no image on my screen (monitor doesn't even detect anything plugged in).

I took the card out and put in my old ATI 4870 and I got my image back.

My question is, is my card pretty much guaranteed dead? I assume the drivers make absolutely no difference here if I can't even see the image at bootup. Is there any further diagnostics I can perform?

Hi,

Does your 6970 have a dual BIOS switch (should be located near the crossfire fingers) ? You might have some luck with the second BIOS as it'll be at stock clocks.

You could try flashing the BIOS aswell (you can usually find a GPU's stock BIOS at techpowerup.com), though it might not make a difference as the card could just be flat out dead.

It worked! Well kind of. I tried just the switch and it didn't work right away. I did a bit more observation and noticed that the card required two 8 pin power connectors. One was 6+2 pin but the other was an 8 pin adapter connected to a 6 pin. Found a 6+2 pin cable in my PSU box and just connected that directly instead and it booted right up. I assume it wasn't delivering enough voltage when I was OCing. [I was building this PC with a friend (while still learning how to) so I am not sure who made this stupid mistake wiring.]

Thank you so much for your help. I assume I can flash that old setting (in case I don't get it to boot, I have to see first) and always revert to this stock one in case something goes wrong?

Ah right yeah make sure you have the power cables plugged in, always helps :p

Yeah if it wont boot then use the dual BIOS switch if the card has one, or you may have to flash the BIOS yourself.
