I have a new Western Digital 3Tb My Book External hard drive... I've read that it is a good idea to format/test a new hard drive with the Windows 7 Disk Management tool. Is this recommended? If so... does formatting this way remove the backup software etc on the hard drive?

I would do what WD recommends in the manual for the drive. A Windows format may cause problems.

I haven't plugged it in (its probably formatted NTFS)... I'm just looking to know whether it is best to "Plug and Play" an external HD out of the box or is it better to format with WIN 7 Disk Management to check for errors etc while it is formatted?

I plugged in the WD External My Book and ran it thru the Windows 7 Disk Manager with a Quick Format... no sign of the WD Smartware junk and the full volume of the drive is available to use... all seems well.

That's great! Congrats!
