Network Switch Question

Hi, I need to be able to plug a Network TV Tuner in my dad's room, but the router is not located there. It's in my brother's room.. I was wondering if a Ethernet switch can be put in my dad's room, where the cable from the router is going to the switch.. Typically I hear that switches are connected to router. Do switches work this way? Are there any other options if not?

Solution
1. How many ports are on the back of the router? 1, 4, or 5?
2. It works like this: Modem -> router -> devices. Modem and router may be inside the same physical box. "Devices" may include a switch.

If you need more than 4 devices hardwired to the router, a switch will expand that choice.

The router has 5 connections, what I'm wondering is if I can take my dad's existing ethernet cable that is coming from the router, into his room and hook up a Network switch there, in his room.. The router is in another room, but I'm not sure if network switches work this way?

I'm still not quite getting what you're trying to do here.

From te router, you have 4 wired connections. If you need something in another room, run an ethernet cable from the router to that room.

If you have 4 wired devices and want more, unplug one, plug in a switch, and plug the other devices in to that switch.

Sorry, I am kind of stupid when it comes to networking so I'll try to explain what i mean.. my dad's pc is connected to the router through the wall, and it plugs to the router that way. Now I was wondering if the part of the cable that is in my dad's room can be connected to the network switch that will be in his room, not the room that the router is in. Then I could take anothe ethernet cable and plug my dad's pc into the switch. So the switch is in my dad's room, not where the router is.

Ah, OK.
So the actual router is elsewhere, and the PC in Dad's room connects to it through the wall outlet.

Then yes, assuming the router is serving up an IP address to that outlet in Dad's room...Plug the cable from the wall into a switch, and then multiple devices to that switch.
Probably.

Someone along the way should know how the house is actually wired.
