Hello people, I was told instead of going and spending $150 on windows 7 home premium, from my local staples, I could simply buy some DVD-R discs and then copy my existing windows 7 off my laptop to the disc, which I can then use to put the OS on my new desktop build? Will this work and also how do I go about doing this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 7 has a built in image burner that you'll use, once you burn and install it, you should be prompted for a key when you try to activate, which should take you somewhere you can buy one...
@Newdogmang,

First - you cannot (easily) make Windows install DVD off existing files.
Second (as Bubblehead mentioned), this would be illegal.
Third - even if it was possible, the activation key from your laptop would not work on your desktop.

Finally - you don't have to buy (retail version) from Staples. OEM version (also called System Builder) is under $100 at most places - eg http://www.amazon.com/Windows-System-Builder-OEM-64-Bit/dp/B0094NY3R0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381534732&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+oem

So my choices for adding an OS to my new build are to buy a new version at a store or off the web?

What if I buy one off the web, do i get the authentication key right away? And also how do I start to put it on my computer if I dont have the physical windows 7 disk ?D:

If you just need install media you can find it by googleing "Windows 7 digital river", but you do need another license to run it on another machine, may as well buy new media. OEM's the way to go if you're not going to mess with this machine after it's done.

I would like to actually play games on my desktop , so I have looked and started to download the windows 7 home premium 64 bit from Digital River. After this is done can I just use Windows Media Player to burn it to a DVD-R disc and then purchase a version off the web? And i heard you get the authentication code automatically when you buy it from online? So can I use this and the burned disc to install the OS on my new computer?

alright, well im downloading the digital river version at the moment and i guess ill try to find out how to burn it to the CD and then attempt to install. Maybe ill get lucky and be able to buy one off the web and get the auth. code instantly without having to wait for the physical copy to come in the mail 2 weeks later. thanks
