My friend built me a computer a year ago and since then he's kept my windows disk but lost the windows key.how could I upgrade my computer without reinstalling windows 7? Or a way that doesn't use the cd key. That's my only issue that I know of. But there's one last problem. He builds computers for a living and the windows disk he gave me might not be the exact windows disk he used for my computer. Will this effect me at all? Thanks!

The only thing that actually matters is the activation key. A Windows 7 ISO can be downloaded, legally, and burned to a dvd. Install and use a valid key to activate.

This sounds all kinds of 'not legit'.
If he does this 'for a living', he should be able to easily retrieve the key for any Windows installation he's ever done.

If all else fails you could try calling microsoft and explaining the situation. I doubt it's the first time they've dealt with the issue, and if you can provide some sort of proof of purchae/rma/etc. all the better.
