Hello!
My system:
i5-2500k
asus p8z68-v lx
sapphire hd 7970 dual x
OCZ 700W Modxstream 80 plus bronze
How I managed to rig my video card:
The OCZ modxstream is half modular.
there is 2 pci-e cables that can be hooked in the OCZ. the PCI-E are 2 8 pins in the power supply, but the cables are 1 8 to 6+2 pin and 1 8 to 6 pin (in fact its 6 to 6 with the plastic pins to help support).
I was not able to get proper wattage to my card using only 14 pins, thus I had to use, from the molex / sata exits (which are non PCI 6 pin (when looking inside only 4 pins are connected)).
My card is thus connected with 1 8pin pci-e from my modx and 1 8pin from molex adaptor. I believe this might cause the issue of having not enough wattage coming out of the psu to the card.
As I write this I have been searching for an answer for one full day, but there is nothing explicit about plugging a HD 7970 into a Modxstream that I can find.
Symptoms:
Trying to overclock my card I have ran into multiple failures trying to clock it anywhere near 1150w for clock speed. Everytime I have tried to increase the voltage to 1.25V and when using GPU-Z and Furmark, the voltage never exceeds 1.175V and the wattage never exceeds 200W, whenever it is near 200W or tries to exceed 200W, my GPU crashes and that results in multiple artifacts.
My quick fix: I am looking at a corsair AX860 plat +, its an awesome psu I know, but it is 200$, just want to make sure that the PSU is indeed my problem here, I wouldn't want to waste all that AWESOME wattage from the corsair.
Can I just get an 8 pin to 8 pin and pray the lords for 300W at least to get to my card?
