Basically, I'm building a brand new PC for BF4 since my current one is beyond upgrade. I have everything (including an 8350), but I need my GPU. I've been holding off on it for AMD's new cards (I'm only going AMD, don't sway me) because of the good things I've heard about them.

Problem is the price for me. A new Sapphire 280x Vapor-x (I want this model) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202045&ignorebbr=1
Is $310, and so are the clearence 7970's

Thing is, BF4 is a gaming evolved title, and will soon be a part of their "never settle program" (rumored, too early to be sure) presumably as a Gold title. It will probably be available with their Top 7000 and 200 series. 7970 would qualify for BF4 free, but the now mid-range 280x won't. Only the 290 and 290x of the 200 series will likely come with BF4. I would love a 290, but it will be $500 or just short of it.

So:
7970 now and sacrifice the performance of a new card for the $60 saved by not buying BF4 retail

R9 280X in a week or two with about 5% better performance than 7970 with promising features and improvements that I really like BUT tack on $60 for the now BF4 retail copy I'll need to buy

R9 290 in a few weeks, most likely on BF4 release, for a whopping $500 for a 20% increase from 280x for another $200, BUT get BF4 paid for. Plus, AMD true-audio and 780-par performance, but at a great cost

Crossfiring 7970/280x not in my price range, don't recommend that
I REALLY don't want to pay upwards $500 for a GPU, so keep that in mind when answering and I really want a new card since 7000 is already 2 year old tech.

What should I do? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Depends how long you want to wait. I just went through the same decision and decided the deal I was getting on 7970 was too good to pass on. Plus I didn't have a gaming machine and I couldn't wait any longer......

My first build too :)

Err, was afraid of that. Might just buy the best coolest 280x I can (vapor-x is $310) and shell out for BF4 release day . . . I have all of the good never settle titles already . . .

Thank you!! Unlike you, I have/had no pc games, so the never settle deal made it even sweeter for me.

Plus I plan to play more sim racing games, and while they can be graphic taxing, they aren't BF4 or some of the other games that really strain the systems.

Whatever you choose,I am sure will be more than happy. I haven't had a pc for gaming in about 8 years and my 8350/7970 build is NICE :)

Haha, thats pretty much what I'm building. Cheapest price/performance quality build possible right now!

Honestly I would give it a few weeks. Let some more reviews come out. See how much Nvidia wants to drop prices. I was really looking forward to some new architecture but the only new stuff is $500+ and its only 2 cards. Waiting on Maxwell is getting easier and easier for me.

Personally, I purchased the Gigabyte Windforce Radeon HD 7970 OC 3GB (GV-R797OC-3GD) at NCIX for $300. It's the only HD 7xxx series card that HardOCP gave a gold award to. It's not nearly as thick as the ASUS but it is more powerful. It has 3 fans and it is cool and quiet. According to HardOCP, it overclocks like a demon. Here's a pic of it:

This is one of the most powerful HD 7970s that one can buy. It would easily match the R9-280X in everything except it doesn't have the new TrueAudio technology. Doesn't matter to me, I don't have speakers in my monitor and if I want TrueAudio, I can just crossfire it with an R9-280X later on because they're 100% compatible.

I had a Gigabyte Windforce 3X GTX 670 OCed @ 1150MHz core and 1502.1mem. It was a very fast quiet card. I love Gigabyte, but now I love ASUS and AMD! I pull 8000+ in firestrike, and still have OCing headroom, the 280X only gets 6800+

I prefer at least the 280x. right now, 270x=7870 in performance. I want this PC to last as long as I can. Not interested in 2-year upgrades. If I can't play BF4 on Ultra around 70fps, then I know the card will run well for a few years. I don't want to sacrifice the quality for a quick buck to save. I want at least the power of a 7970. I'm starting to sway to the beautiful new 280x models, since they are techinically overhauled 7970's but I'm contemplating over the 290 if its under $500 or so. 290 has a marginally higher 25% performance. Wish there was an in between model :/ all these low level GPU's, and only the top 3 models will recieve massive sales.

The R9 290 will very likely be 500 or less. The R9 290X will probably be closer to GX 780 prices. Of course its pure speculation until they hit the shelves.

That's why I'm really hoping the 290 is $449 reference, $475 aftermarket.
