is this PSU powerful enough?

I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card into Crossfire and was wondering if I need a new power supply. Here are my specs.

Current PSU: Seasonic S12D 850w
Current Graphics: Gigabyte 7970 OC

Desired Graphics: 2x Gigabyte R9 290x OC (Crossfired)

Other parts
Intel i7 4770
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H (nothing too fancy)
16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz value ram
3x 120mm fans6
Sound card
Internal DVD Burner
3x SATA HDD
1x SSD HDD

It should support it. You have 2 12V rails at 40a each. I'm not sure on the power that the 290X takes, but you should be fine, it probably wont be any more (probably less) than the current generation of cards.

Yes, that PSU will power those cards and give you overclocking headroom as well.

thanks for all the help guys and gals! gonna make it a tough time to choose best answer. on a side note, if the PC isn't powerful enough or is too close to the edge - will i just get early shut offs and such, or would i be putting my crossfire cards at risk?

You most likely wouldn't lose the cards even if the PSU blew (since it's a high-quality unit; your mileage may vary), but it won't, because that system won't even be able to get it to 80% of its rated output
