On newegg I see two Asus 280x's one is the ASUS MATRIX-R9280X-P-3GD5 which is clocked higher and is 3 slots wide, but costs $40 more. The other is the ASUS R9280X-DC2T-3GD5 which is clocked 30Mhz lower and is only two slots.

I want to know if there is much of a performance difference or cooling difference between the two? Also if anyone thinks its worth the extra money?

30Mhz for $40 is a joke, and unless I'm mistaken the dual slot card is a better cooler, its the newer sort used on the 780.

Does anyone know if the 3 slot matrix stays any cooler?

DONT TOUCH the Matrix if you not going to water cool on ln2. Go with the DC2, it has the same heatsink under the hood, and actually has higher ASIC quality which means it's better on air. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1837310/locked-u...

And the DC2 is just like the Matrix but without fancy lights.

edit: ops its the hd 7970 matrix..

I am going to assume that the 7970 matrix has the same cooler as the 280x matrix.

More than that, you can assume that they're the same card, because they are. I would take the HD 7970 if I were you. Same card, slightly lower price, free games included. AMD is making these cards very attractive right now.

Yes but if that's not a big deal...yet. If and when it becomes a big deal, just get an R9-280X and crossfire them with it as the primary. You don't need 2 TrueAudios.

about true audio.... the 280X doesn't have true audio. Only the 290X 290 and 260X have it.

Go for the Saphire R9 280x Toxic edition. In some games it is like 2-3% behind 780. Yes not 770, really the 780. I was going to get this but I got a very good deal on 2x760s so I went for SLI nvidia route.

Benchmarks for confirmation

And it looks even more badass and probably overclocks higher.

do you think the slightly better performance of the toxic is worth the extra $50 over the normal asus?

Would I run into any problems Oc'ing a normal 280x or 7970 to 1100Mhz? And save money by not getting the toxic.

Dude toxic is already very nicely overclocked and it still has some headroom from what I see in reviews. I got Asus gtx 660s and although it seemed overclockable by 10% I only got half of it out of mine Asus is good and quiet with cooling but it is not always the greatest overclocker. So toxic gives you more edge because with already an out of the box like that it means they got good silicone in those chips. In the end it is up to you. I personally would not even buy 280x if it was not for toxic from sapphire. Because a GHZ edition can cut it too and has free games etc. You eventually have to pay premium to stay ahead. For example gtx 690 and titan are still the best, so the purchasers of these cards paid the premium of staying on top of tech pyramid for a very long time. Toxic is the best 280x out there so if that is what you want then you should get it. If you say you would like to pay 60 less and get a 7970 with free games then that is not bad too because next year there might be some major changes with graphics cards due to change of production process and incoming Maxwell cards. Considering all these it is really up to you since I cannot evaluate the risk for you as you know your situation the best.
