A friend of mine is a professional game developer, and a serious specialist in gaming hardware; he has been building and tuning PCs for nearly three decades.

Now, we were discussing our next GPU purchases a while back and we also talked about RAM amount.

Usually on web forums and on GPU reviews they say that you need more GPU RAM once you go up in resolution and/or have multiple monitors. To me this makes sense, but then again, I know almost nothing about the inner workings of hardware or game code.

Now, this dev friend of mine told me that resolution alone does NOT require any more RAM to run. What gives?

I know my friend knows his stuff but pro analysts who do the GPU reviews must know their stuff too. What is the truth here and can both possibly be right?

For a single 1080 or even 1440p screen 2gb is enough. If you are going for surround 1080 or 1440p then you want to step up to 3/4gb
