Light lines / shadows appear at sharp edges on HDTV

I just bought a 26" full HD TV to use primarily as a monitor (but also as a TV when needed). I originally connected it using an HDMI cable but I noticed that all the text and small detailed objects like icons looked blurry.

I read online that it was the sharpness setting that could cause this so I turned it to 0. The picture improved but the problem still hasn't completely gone away.

I eventually realised that it is the sharp edges on the screen that are the problem. Basically a light edge appears at sharp transitions from light to dark, so you can imagine that this appears around every bit of text / detail on the screen. I also noticed that light text on a dark background has similar dark shadows around it.

I switched to the VGA connection which has special PC settings on the TV such as phase. These didn't seem to have any effect but the problem is generally less noticeable using the VGA. This could be because everything is slightly blurred anyway so the edges aren't as sharp, but it seems ridiculous that at 1080p the picture through the VGA cable looks the same, if not slightly better than the picture through the HDMI cable!

Any ideas?

Spec:
ATI Radeon HD 5770
Finlux 26F7030 TV
Windows 7

Solved!

I tried using a DVI cable today and plugged it into the HDMI port on the TV with an DVI > HDMI adapter. Lo and behold, it worked! The weird edges and fuzziness have completely gone!

I'm not sure if it's a problem with the HDMI port on the graphics card or perhaps even the HDMI cable I was using (although it was a brand new and gold plated). Strange how it affected the VGA connection as well though since this was via a DVI > VGA adapter from the graphics card.

So I'd recommed using a DVI connection if anyone else encounters a similar problem.
