So I am trying to optimize my ram speed. Half of my ram is 2(4gb) 933 mhz ddr3 1866, (new) and the other half is 2(2gb) 800 mhz ddr3 1600(harvested from old pc when i upgraded, and i didn't want it to go to waste!). My question is whether or not i can run the 8gb of ram at 1866 while running the other 4 gb 1600, since that is their limit. both are Gskill Ram. My MOBO is an ASROCK z77 Extreme4, processor is i53570 ivy bridge.

Thanks in advance! if it is a simple no, i will leave them at 1600. I do know how to go into the bios, i just wasn't sure if there were some advanced settings i was missing to optimize it fuller.

Hi. You didin't give any information on your computer, but it probably doesn't matter here. Most Motherboards these days will run up to 1600 Mhz natively, and can only run higher through an overclock. If you pulled the 1600 Mhz, RAM out of there ( which I would do ). it will run at 1600Mhz. If you have mixed speed ram installed, it will run at the lowest speed, so the simple answer is no.

Thanks, i figured, yeah my motherboard can run past 1866, i just was not sure if i could run the extra 4 gigs of ram at 1600 while running the other 8 at 1866. Would it be better to run just the 8 gigs at 1866? or to run the 12 gigs at 1600?

Since you have them, try running all at 1600, and see what the difference is, depending on what all you do the more DRAM at 1600 may well be better than 8 at 1866
