I'm currently running 32 bit and want to upgrade. I want to upgrade but I don't know if I can continue using norton security, since you can use it 3 times, but I don't want to risk losing my anti virus, so if I upgrade will I lose it or not?

Hello,

I am Vineeth and I am from the Norton Support team.
You will not lose your Norton product when you upgrade to 64 bit OS. You just need to uninstall the Norton product before you upgrade and then install the Norton product once you upgrade, so it will not be counted as an additional license.

You can uninstall the Norton product from the Add or Remove programs. Once you upgrade, you can reinstall the Norton product as mentioned in the following KB article...

Hah, +1.

In place of Norton, I recommend the free version of AVG or Avast antivirus. You can buy the full version of either if you want live support, but either free version is better than the paid version of Norton.

You could also try Comodo, that is what I use on my main desktop, but it takes quite some time to "train". I use AVG on all my other machines.

I also recommend malwarebytes in addition to whatever active antivirus you choose.

+1 as well. You will also need to install a 64-bit version of your antivirus software.

The rest of your 32-bit software should work fine under 64 bit windows, though there might be 1 or 2 exceptions.

Norton is one of the only antivirus programs I have encountered that behaves similarly to a virus itself. It is a horrible program that causes systemic problems in some computers, slowness, and tries to take over every aspect of your computer. Try Avast, Avira, or AVG.

A 64-bit system runs 32-bit software faster than a 32-bit system does. The biggest difference is the addition of 64-bit software. I agree about Norton though, it's kind of like Dell, only the computer illiterate use it. I use AVG Free and Spybot Search & Destroy and I haven't had a virus infection in about 7 years. Upgrade to the 64-bit system and install one of the virus scanners recommended in this thread and one of the spyware blockers in this thread. You should be fine then.
