Hi, Im at a loss. My PC randomly freezes/locks up. I have to do a hard reset of my machine when it happens. If music is playing then it rapidly loops the sound at the point of locking up. It makes no difference if playing games or browsing the web, it totally random.

Things i have done so far are, tested my ram (both sticks individual) also tested the other slot i use on the mobo with both sticks with memtest 86 (that passed). Run prime 95 for an hour both with and without my overclock on the cpu (passed no problems). Run my antivirus/spyware utils (my system is clean). Decreased ram frequency from 1600MHZ down to 800MHz. If anyone could point out any other tests i could try to find the fault on my machine that would be greatly appreciated.

System specs are: Asus P8Z68v-pro, i52500k cpu with aftermarket cooler (o/c to 4GHz), 2x 4Gb gskill 1600MHz DDR3 ram, GTX 680 (gigabyte) GPU, 2x 1TB HDD's (Storage/Game Installs), 1 64GB SSD (operating system only), 1 generic dvd burner, antec truepower 650w psu. I also have 2 monitors 1 24" 1080p using a dvi to hdmi lead and a 17" monitor using VGA with a DVI adapter, Windows 7 Home Premium (paid copy not cracked). All drivers are up to date also. If you need any other info on my machine i can provide it.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

*edit*
I also monitor the temps of my machine with open hardware monitor, my CPU never goes above 65-66*c and gpu maximum is around 75*c but only when playing high demanding games.

I believe you're having some troubles with your Hard disk bro. You better get the HD Tune Pro software and check your Hard disk for some errors or bad sectors. You know I used to have this problem, and in the end,I had to get my HDD serviced. (Toshiba didn't do a replacement sadly :( ). So,after checking it with the above said software,if you're detecting some errors or something like CRC warning, communication errors, then I'd say it's your HDD. If there are no errors, then there's something else wrong with your PC. Please provide your Tune Pro check results.

Well,it appears that your HDDs are in good condition. So...it must be some software bug,if you're sure you got no problems with the RAM. Have you ever experienced this before? I mean,is this happening after you did some software change, like re-installing the OS?

Its been happening for about 2-3 month. About a month ago I formatted all my drives and re installed windows to try and solve the problem but it made no difference. I built the computer roughly 14 months ago and had no issues with it until this. The only hardware change i made was upgrading the GPU from a GTX 560 about 6 months after the build and the only software changes were game installs. It all ran stable until 2-3 month ago and there was no apparent reason for it to start acting up. I have cleaned dust ect out my PC twice since the build and removed hardware to blow down with canned air. I also used an antistatic band i bought when i built my machine and the components were place on cardboard.

I did 2 passes on each stick 1 pass in each slot using memtest86 and it showed no errors so i am assuming the sticks and board are ok.

I will give that a try, I will use the hd *000 (not sure) built into the cpu and remove the 680 and run my pc for a few days to test, if it still continues I have a spare 500w psu (its crap but it works) in my old machine to try.

I will post in a few days and with luck the problem will be found. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this problem. At least the hard drives have been eliminated now and i would of never thought of that :)

Yeah..Just like I told you,I had a similar issue and in the end,I had to get my HDD dead. But there were some clicking sounds coming out of my HDD. Hope you don't have those. :)
And yes, check it with the GPU removed. If it persists, try with the PSU. Again,if it persists without any change,I'd say,if it ain't a problem, you could try doing a fresh install of Windows. Just in case there's some problem with the system files? Should consider all possibilities, hmm? :)

I have swapped out the Power supply for now, i didnt like the look of the 500w spare I had so i borrowed a spare 600w off a friend. With luck it will be the power supply and if not i will take out the GPU and run the machine on the HD3000.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me with this problem.

I think is is the power supply, I have had no freezing what so ever since i swapped it out. I would of never of thought of that without help. I will keep this one in until I get the funds together for a decent quality one. Thanks again for your help, you have been a life saver. I will mark your last post above as solution. Thanks again.
