Copy HD contents from dead desktop to new PC

As described in my older thread (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1828207/boot-power-supply.html#11669688), the family PC finally went nuts and we have now upgraded to a new desktop.
We need to copy over all the contents of the old PC HD, but since this is something I've never actually done myself I wanted to make sure I go about it correctly.

Would I need to go the route of getting an external sata to usb adapter cable and copying over manually, or is it possible to connect directly to the tower?
 
Solution
Either connect it internally in the working PC, or get a USB IDE/SATA cable or dock. I have one, and it has proven invaluable for rescuing data from various old disks. Handy to have around.

Yes. I have one almost exactly like that. Works seamlessly with just about any drive sold in this century.
